Eating the right types of fruit for health is key, and more often than not we see the same mistake being made by clients in the clinic, a fruit smoothie made entirely of fruit, water/nut milk/yoghurt and thats it! An unbalanced smoothie can cause serious blood sugar imbalanced and lead to hormone disruption, weight gain, mood fluctuations, and conditions as serious as diabetes if consumed over a period of time.
…So what is a balanced smoothie?
Choose 1 or 2 for a base: Avocado, banana, pre-soaked nuts/seeds, almond butter, tahini, coconut yoghurt, oats.
Choose 1 or 2 proteins: Hemp seeds/powder, rice protein, spirulina, soaked buckwheat, nuts, seeds, nut butters.
Add a liquid: Coconut water, water, nut milk, herbal tea, Kefir, ice.
Greens: choose 1 cup of Spinach, Kale, herbs, swiss chard (use every second day or omit if you have thyroid problems e.g hypothyroidism)
Fruit 1 portion: (optional) Pineapple, pear, peeled apple, juice of orange/lemon, lime/ grapefruit (don’t use citrus juice if using nut milk)
Antioxidant berries: all berries are acceptable, cherries, grapes, pomegranate, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, blackberry etc. Fresh or frozen berries are fine, All fruit must be ripe otherwise they can be acid forming and pro inflammatory.
Nutritional boosts: (optional) Spirulina, goji berry, chia, cacao, coconut, Açaí berry, bee pollen, maca root powder.
